John L. Baldridge
1845-1941
CO G 129 O.V.I.
John L. Baldridge--we salute you as Adams County's last surviving Union Veteran of the Civil War.
Respect for Mr. Baldridge was abundant in his neighborhood, the village of West Union, among Civil War Veterans, and the congregation of the West Union M.E. Church.
Unassuming in manner, he was of average build and had a long beard. The residence property depicted attention to appearance.
Mr. Baldridge drove a Model T closed one seated car. When he rode to town with a friend, he walked four squares to return home.
With the accompaniment of Harry A. Suffron, local school principal, this revered Civil War Veteran was privileged to attend the 1938 75th Anniversary observance of the Battle of Gettysburg where he witnessed President Franklin D. Roosevelt unveil a fine monument.
Length and quality of physical and mental abilities served him well, practically to the end of his advanced years.
Portraying our Civil War soldier is Brian Baldridge. He is a relative of John Baldridge and is an Adams County Commissioner. He is also a farmer from the Cherry Fork, Ohio area and is married to Lori and they have two children--Casey and Alyson. He is honored to be portraying his relative John Baldridge, the last surviving Union Civil War soldier in Adams County.
