The Friends of Jennie Wade are proudly sponsoring Jennie Wade for their entry into the Fall Back into Time contest. Jennie is representing the many volunteers in this region who give of their time and energy to their communities.
Jennie Wade, 1843-1863, was a young volunteer of the great Civil War and a heroine to her hometown of Gettysburg Pennsylvania. During the battle of Gettysburg Jennie was killed by a stray bullet. She was baking bread for the troops. She and her sister had regularly volunteered their time to help the Union troops who traveled through the region. To the Friends of the Jennie Wade, a restored riverboat attraction in Clermont county's Chilo Lock #34 Park, Jennie, the boat's namesake, represents the spirit of the many men and women who volunteered their time and energy to save the Jennie Wade sternwheeler.
Portraying Jennie Wade is Leaghann Dyke Jones formerly of Ripley , Ohio. Leaghann began doing the portrayal of Jennie as a volunteer in high school. She is presently studying to be a nurse.
